Local bankers are cautiously optimistic

by admin on January 31, 2011

Businesses haven’t borrowed as much in recent years amid stagnant sales and the dearth of credit, but some local bankers have expressed cautious optimism that 2011 will mark an improvement in commercial lending.

“We are seeing signs that things are better, but the stats out there are not dramatically better,” said Mark Metcalfe, the San Antonio-based regional manager for Wells Fargo’s commercial banking office. “We need to see the consumer spend more, which I think will give our entrepreneurs more desire to buy that next plant, combine that next business or continue to invest in their business.”

Figures from the Federal Reserve suggest that commercial and industrial lending is picking up.
