San Antonio – Home to a new $350 million children’s hospital

by admin on October 18, 2012

The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted on Friday to authorize the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to execute an agreement with Nashville-based Vanguard Health Systems to develop a free-standing children’s hospital in the Alamo City.

The proposed $350 million, 250-bed facility, funded by Vanguard, will anchor a network of clinics that provide access to top pediatric care throughout the region, according to UT System officials.

Nashville-based Vanguard, which owns Baptist Health System in San Antonio, will partner with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) on the project.

The Health Science Center will provide faculty from UT Medicine San Antonio, who will offer general and specialty care to children and adolescents at the facility. Health Science Center faculty will lead medical students, residents and fellows in instruction and cutting-edge research.

Interim Health Science Center President Dr. Kenneth Kalkwarf says the decision represents a tremendous step forward toward enhancing world-class pediatric care in San Antonio and South Texas.

The hospital is expected to provide students and medical residents with educational and research experiences as future pediatric health care providers working in the region.
